Τα Σπήλαια του Διρού
Τα Σπήλαια του Διρού, ένα από τα πιο εντυπωσιακά φυσικά μνημεία της Ελλάδας, βρίσκονται στα δυτικά παράλια της Μάνης, στην Περιφερειακή Ενότητα Λακωνίας. Οι επισκέπτες που έχουν περιηγηθεί στα σπήλαια αυτά, ιδιαίτερα στο πιο διάσημο από αυτά, τη Βλυχάδα (ή Γλυφάδα), έχουν μείνει άφωνοι από την ομορφιά και το μεγαλείο των σταλακτιτών και σταλαγμιτών που έχουν σχηματιστεί εδώ και εκατοντάδες χιλιάδες χρόνια.
Τα Σπήλαια του Διρού περιλαμβάνουν δύο κύριες σπηλιές: τη Βλυχάδα και την Αλεπότρυπα. Η Βλυχάδα είναι γνωστή για τις υποβρύχιες διαδρομές της, που καλύπτουν το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της, και για τις εντυπωσιακές μορφολογίες της, ενώ η Αλεπότρυπα έχει σημαντική αρχαιολογική αξία, καθώς οι ανασκαφές έχουν αποκαλύψει ίχνη ανθρώπινης παρουσίας από τη Νεολιθική Εποχή. Σύμφωνα με αρχαιολογικά ευρήματα, η Αλεπότρυπα ίσως είχε χρησιμοποιηθεί από τους ανθρώπους της Νεολιθικής Εποχής ως τόπος λατρείας ή ως είσοδος στον Κόσμο των Νεκρών.
Η πρώτη συστηματική εξερεύνηση της Βλυχάδας πραγματοποιήθηκε το 1949 από τον Γιάννη και την Άννα Πετροχείλου, ιδρυτές της Ελληνικής Σπηλαιολογικής Εταιρείας. Μέχρι το 1960, είχαν χαρτογραφηθεί περίπου 1.600 μέτρα της σπηλιάς, ενώ οι έρευνες συνεχίζονται μέχρι σήμερα, με συνολικό γνωστό μήκος που ξεπερνά τα 15 χιλιόμετρα. Η πρώτη υποβρύχια εξερεύνηση έγινε το 1970, και το 1971. Το νερό που καλύπτει το μεγαλύτερο τμήμα της τουριστικής διαδρομής είναι υφάλμυρο. Η εσωτερική θερμοκρασία του σπηλαίου κυμαίνεται από 16 έως 19 βαθμούς Κελσίου (ανάλογα και με την εποχή), οπότε όσοι νιώθουν πως θα κρυώνουν κατά τη διάρκεια της παραμονής τους εκεί συστήνεται να έχουν μαζί τους κατάλληλα ρούχα. Σημειωτέον, το σπήλαιο διαθέτει και καταπληκτική ακουστική. Δεν είναι τυχαίο, ότι το 1971 προσκλήθηκε ο Γάλλος συνθέτης Pierre Arnaud για ηχογραφήσεις εντός του, οι οποίες κυκλοφόρησαν έπειτα σε δίσκο βινυλίου από τον Εθνικό μας Οργανισμό Τουρισμού (με τον τίτλο «Music From The Caves Of Diros», καθώς ηχογραφήσεις έγιναν και στην Αλεπότρυπα).

Day 2: Discover the historic Diros Caves and enjoy water sports at sunset.

Book a group or private boat tour and explore the rare geological monument that took hundreds of thousands of years to form. Admire the stalactites and stalagmites and indulge in the enchanting acoustics of the cave. Fans of Greek mythology will be thrilled to learn that these caves were once considered one of the entrances to Hades.

If you plan to stay more than three days in Mani, you should make time to visit the fortress of Mystras in Taygetos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It takes about an hour to reach Mystras from Oitylo by car, following the Gytheio-Sparti highway. Built in 1249 by the Franks and occupied by the Byzantines from 1262 until 1460, when the Turks occupied it, the fortress tells two centuries of Byzantine history and counts many churches and chapels.
The nature around the castle is ideal for hiking, trekking or even climbing for the more experienced. When you return to Brazzo di Maina, enjoy a delicious dinner at the restaurant “In Pietra” with fresh local products and excellent wine, to close your day in the best way.
Day 5: Live the day with a road trip to Gythio and Alypa Beach.
Before you say goodbye, a Mani holiday agenda includes a road trip to the eastern side of the peninsula. Driving through barren lands and olive groves, you will reach Gythio, a port with colorful houses and a Cycladic island feel. Although Mani means untouched nature, wild beauty and unpretentious architecture, in Gythio you will admire the Girls' School and the Town Hall, two neoclassical buildings designed by Ernst Ziller in the 19th century.
After spending the morning in town, drive further south on the peninsula to reach Alypa Beach. Soak up the sun, relax, swim and enjoy an authentic local meal right on the beach in one of the quaint tavernas.
